This study examines the role of international sports events in shaping and developing tourism markets, focusing on global best practices and their applicability to Azerbaijan. A comparative
qualitative research methodology is employed, involving an analysis of the Olympic Games, FIFA World Cups, and Formula 1 Grand Prix events hosted by various countries and destinations. The study explores how these events contribute to tourism growth, destination competitiveness, and international visibility. The findings indicate that international sports events generate both direct and indirect effects on the tourism sector. Direct impacts include increased visitor arrivals, higher tourism
revenues, and greater demand for accommodation, transportation, and hospitality services during the event period. Indirect impacts involve enhanced destination image, stronger international recognition, infrastructure modernization, increased investment attractiveness, and the creation of long-term marketing opportunities. Furthermore, sports mega-events can contribute to local economic development and strengthen national identity by projecting a positive image of the host destination to global audiences. However, the sustainability of tourism growth depends largely on effective post event legacy management, the continued utilization of infrastructure, and the integration of event outcomes into broader national tourism and development strategies. The study concludes that although Azerbaijan has successfully positioned itself as a regional sports tourism hub, stronger strategic coordination among tourism, sports, infrastructure, and marketing stakeholders is necessary
to maximize long-term tourism benefits, maintain competitive advantages, and ensure sustainable legacy outcomes.
