Abstract

The financing of research in the higher education system is one of the key factors ensuring the 
sustainability of scientific activities. Traditional funding models face challenges such as dependence 
on state budgets, economic instability, and limited private sector involvement. The analysis of the 
current funding mechanisms for research applied both internationally and in the country is essential 
for identifying their strengths and weaknesses. This article explores various approaches to financing 
higher education institutions, including institutional and project-based funding models, performance
based funding systems, the excellence university initiative, and international grant programs.
